چکیده

The aim of this review is to survey the state of the art relating to the rolling contact fatigue (RCF) investigation of various overlay coatings and also, to ascertain the influence of design parameters such as the type of deposition process, coating material and thickness on the RCF performance. Rolling contact fatigue is a significant factor in the failure of components in rolling/sliding contact. Although, sintered ceramics have provided improvements in RCF life of components in rolling/sliding contact, e.g. hybrid ceramic bearings, the economic and technological constraints associated have so far limited their use to specialist applications. Physical and chemical vapor deposition (PVD, CVD) as well as thermal spraying are methods of depositing overlay coatings. The designer must thus choose a deposition method based on economic and technical flexibility, e.g. material choice, functional grading, etc. Amongst this family of overlay coatings, PVD coatings are already finding commercial use whilst others are at a research and development stage. The available literature on the RCF testing of various types of overlay coatings is considerable, but it is generally difficult to synthesize all of the results to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the parameters which can have a significant effect on a coating’s resistance to rolling contact fatigue. This review thus compares the RCF performance of these overlay coatings and discusses the results in terms of coating processes, materials, thickness, residual stress and tribological conditions of contact stress and lubrication. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Contact Fatigue

CONTACT FATIGUE is a surface-pitting-type failure commonly found in ball or roller bearings. This type of failure can also be found in gears, cams, valves, rails, and gear couplings. Contact fatigue has been identified in metal alloys (both ferrous and nonferrous) and in ceramics and cermets. Contact fatigue differs from classic structural fatigue (bending or torsional) in that it results from ...

Investigation and Simulation of Wire Non-Asymmetric Rolling Process

The non-asymmetric rolling process of copper and brass wire has been simulated with the Abaqus software. Presented finite element model in this simulation of rolling predicted output curvature and contact surface width in the non-asymmetric mode (in equality of diameter of rollers, the rotational speed of the rollers and the rollers’ surface finish). The material used in this research has strai...

The Basic Relationship between Residual Stress Profile Patterns and Fatigue Life of Precision Machined Surfaces in Rolling Contact

The characteristics of residual stress (RS) profiles and their effects on rolling contact fatigue life for precision turned and ground surfaces with a white layer (WL) are very controversial. The key findings of this study are: (a) The basic RS profiles by a sharp tool can be fundamentally changed by a turned WL but not a ground WL; (b) The hook shaped RS profile of a turned surface may have ab...

FATIGUE BEHAVIOUR OFA ROLLED AZ31 MAGNESIUM ALLOYS PREPARED BY EPAND BB CONDITIONS

Abstract: Rotating bending fatigue tests have been performed using smooth specimens of a rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy in laboratory air at ambient temperature. Fatigue strength and characteristic was evaluated and fracture mechanism was discussed on the basis fracture surface analysis. Electrical polishing (EP) as well as deep rolling (ball burnishing (BB)) U-notched specimens were performed on ...

Thermal Desorption Analysis of Hydrogen in Non-hydrogen-Charged Rolling Contact Fatigue- Tested 100Cr6 steel

Hydrogen diffusion during rolling contact fatigue (RCF) is considered a potential root cause or accelerator of white etching cracks (WECs) in wind turbine gearbox bearing steels. Hydrogen entry into the bearing steel during operation is thought to occur either through the contact surface itself, or through cracks that breach the contact surface, in both cases by the decomposition of lubricant t...
